About Society

The bugle of the First Indian Freedom Struggle in the year 1857 ushered in a new era in the Indian history. At about the same time or little earlier the Bombay Madras rail track was laid by the British G.I.P. Railway Company which opened a new history for the people of Gulbarga. Gulbarga being on the railway line between Bombay and Madras, come closer to Bombay and the outside world and it was the beginning of the new opportunities and think waves which swayed away the lives of the Gulbarga District.

The youths of the district, started visiting Pune and Bombay mostly for their higher education and thus came in contact with the freedom movement then led by Lokamanya Balgangadhar Tilak. Because of the railway line the district head quarter was shifted to Gulbarga town once again Gulbarga began to enjoy the prominence after the down fall of Bahamani Dynasty. All there had a lasting impact on the middle class society of the Gulbarga district. Late Sri Vithalrao Deulgaonkar, one of the leading lawyers of the town then with the like minded friends, having thus been inspired by the dynamic leadership of Lokamanya Tilak started Nutan Vidyalaya School and Society with primary classes as an humble beginning, with a desire to inculcate national values and spirit among the children of the district. The school, to begin with had seven students and one teacher namely Sri Bapuji Govind Sathe, in June 1907.

Once the school started about 99 year ago as a pioneer, then there was no question of looking back. The society and the school made a steady progress all there years. The number of students swelled from time and there was also remarkable increase in the strength of dedicated and meritorious teachers. The society in achieving all there has also Stood the ‘First Test’ from time to time. The then Nizam Government which was said to be the puppet of the British Government had almost been hostile with the nationalist activities of the school and the society. The police had always kept an eagle watch over the school apprehending anti-government activities there in. The teachers and the students were many times put to searching test and humiliation. However, the hostile attitude of the government never deterred the school and the society from marching towards its goal of freedom struggle. Some of the officers of the Nizam government being considerate had at times praised the school and the society, serving the cause of education and this has gone on record. One of the significant events of those days was the visit of Mahatma Gandhiji in February/March 1927 to school.

Today the Nutan Vidyalaya Society, to its credit has a number of educational institutions including two High Schools exclusively for boys and one for girls with another English Medium High School. Kannada and Marathi have been medium of instruction .The society which was imparting education, to the students only up to high school, started seriously thinking of having a per University College and accordingly the per University college was started In the year 1969.The society being, not satisfied with this progress, ventured to establish a Degree college in the year 1979 with Arts and Commerce faculties to begin with. The Science faculty was added to it. The society is also running one Polytechnic institute. Once a child is admitted to nursery class in the society premises it can from the campus with youthful energy and as a graduate in any of the disciplines. There are more then 5000 students with more then 300 trained and experienced teachers on the campus of the society from per primary to the degree level the society has added B.Ed . and D.Ed. College to its family of institution.

The Fine Art and the music sections of the degree college have been the illustrious feathers in the cap of the society .It is interesting to note here that Gulbarga University and Nutan Vidyalaya Degree college were established in the same year . Today Nutan Vidyalaya Degree College has a student population of more than 800 with more than 50 qualified and experienced teachers of whom some are Doctors. The society rightly boasts to have a number of rank holders at the state and university examination. The Degree College of the society and other schools has also never lagged behind in extracurricular activities also.

The Nutan Vidyalaya Society has contributed eminent personalities to the society and the nation in different walks of life.

The world famous Artist Sri S.M. Pandit, Kumar Chandrashekhar who studied under the famous Artist Shankarrao Alandkar, the founder of a separate Fine Art Section, a renowned musician Dr. Pandurangrao Patki, the eminent jurist Sri. Hanumanth Ratkalkar, and able administrator Sri. Vithalrao Ratkalkar, the Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Sri. Shivajirao Nilangkar, the former Minister Sri. Mohammad Ali, Sri. Mallikarjun Kharage, Sri. Sethumadhavrao Pagadi, a renowned Film Actress Smt. Vaishali Kasarvalli, Justice Murlidharrao, Sri. P. G. Puramal, IAS, Sri. K.M.Koti.

Sri. Sridharswami of Lad Chincholi, Poojya Dr. Sharanabasappa, Pheethadipati, Sharanabasaweshwar Samsthan, Sri. Sadashiva Maharaj are some of the religious heads. Besides a host of Advocates, Doctors, Engineering and Social workers having been proficient in their respective fields have been giving active hand to the society, being the alumni of Nutan Vidyalaya Society, throughout the length and breadth of the country.

The society has come a log way in the more than 100 years achieving one goal after the other relentlessly and devoted in the cause of service of education in particular and the society in general. All this could not have been possible, but for the devoted and relentless service the eminent personalities like Late Sri. Janaradhanrao Desai, Late Sri. Lakashmayya Kashappa, Late Sri. Pandurangrao Deshmukh , Late Sri. Kishanrao Deshmukh, Late Dr. Venkatrao Sambrani, Late Sri. R. B. Jahagirdhar, Late Sri. Damodarrao Borgaonkar, Late Sri. Jagannathrao Chandriki, Prof. V. P. Deulgaonkar, Late Sri. Mukund Naik, Late Sri. Vithalrao Deshmukh, Dr. V.P.Deulgaonkar, Late Sri. B. W. Jog, Late Sri. Manikrao Kamalapurkar.

The Society has a number of building to house in, their various schools and colleges, duly furnished and equipped in all respects, in it’s campus at Brahampur , Gulbarga .A large and specious play – ground with a well developed sports track near the campus, is an envious asset of the society. The society has constructed the two auditoriums / function halls, near by the playground, which have been resource building ventures. The man behind this project was Late Sri. Sreenvasrao Raghoji , Philanthropist.

The society has also constructed recently a spacious hostel for women attached to the degree college with the partial aid from the University Grants Commission. Two well equipped computer centers with more than forty systems are catering to the needs of the students. A new independent and spacious library has come up in the degree college premises. Besides the society newly constructed big building with a playground attached, in Venkatesh Nagar locality of the city, where in one of the high school of the society namely ‘Vidya Niketan High School ‘ (co–education Kannada medium ) is located.

The Society has acquired a big site, in the outskirts of the city, for its future developmental projects, with the help of the G.D.A.

The younger generation of the society mostly being the past students of the society have now taken the mantel upon them to run the Society and the institutions efficiently with a new vision, and to meet the new challenges of the era without leaving any stone unturned and they are marching towards the Centenary Celebration of the Society with all enthusiasm and vigur , supported by the thousands and thousands and thousands of illustrated past students of the society.
